Leket Israel is Commemorating World Food Day

Thank you to all who took part in the picking

What is World Food Day?

World Food Day was established to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Over 150 countries worldwide celebrate by raising awareness of hunger, poverty and food insecurity throughout the world.

What is Leket Israel?

Leket Israel, the National Food Bank, is the leading food rescue organization in Israel. Unique among all other organizations that serve the poor in Israel and food banks worldwide, Leket Israel’s sole focus is rescuing healthy, surplus food and delivering it to those in need through partner nonprofit organizations.

How Does Leket Israel Address World Food Day?

According to Leket Israel’s 2019 Food Waste and Rescue Report, there are a number of policies that can be implemented to help the underprivileged and address the issue of food insecurity. Some of those practices include: food donations, subsidies, allowances and support.

Food rescue is a unique solution because it provides food aid to those in need without the cost of purchase and production. Rescuing food and distributing it to vulnerable communities also increases the GDP and lowers inequality amongst the population.
